The kaleidoscope, invented by English scientists, became familiar to children as a toy in Japan since it was imported during the Edo era. It was developed by incorporating Japanese paper, up to the point that it became a traditional craft. We would like to utilise this craft as a motif to create a machine which decorates space as an installation. The word “visionary” has two different meanings: a person with a clear vision and a daydreamer. We are utilizing both meanings in the title of the exhibition, “Visionaries of the Kaleidoscope.” The kaleidoscope is created by showing whimsical scenes based on mathematical geometries.
